It's 6 months since my Goldilocks Mastectomy Surgery and the Baby Bears have "settled in" - as time goes on the swelling goes down. I'm still working on getting full range of motion on the side that had node dissections and supraclavicular radiation, but otherwise everything is pretty normal, and I can do most of my activities. I have also started Tai Chi twice a week at lunch. I'm pretty terrible at it, but it is very relaxing, and good for stretching the Baby Bears.
Over the last few months I became part of a research team that combines my expertise in Computer Science with Radiation Oncology and Medical Physics. We recently won the Q+ challenge for our first research project on waiting times in Radiation Oncology. Check out the announcement at: http://muhc.ca/newsroom/article/and-winner-is...
For those of you who also have to take Tamoxifen, which can cause hot flashes and difficulty sleeping, I found a nice set of products that using some high tech materials to make pillows, sheet, mattress pads and blankets that make you feel cooler. I think they really work. Check out http://www.coolingmattress.com/
Over the months I have also figured out the kinds of shirts that work well for me and the Baby Bears. Since I get hot easily, and also I have to take care not to irritate the supraclavicular radiated area, which can get itchy, I have settled on shirts without collars, and a nice soft cami underneath. I know nothing at all about fashion, but I did read that something with a funky design or texture takes the emphasis off how far the breasts do or do not stick out ... In any case, I am completely comfortable with this style of dress, and when I wear colourful shirts without collars I rarely get called "sir" any more. | |
